JOHN LIBBERTON
Born in New Jersey, John Libberton became a Chicagoan at age three. He attended the American Academy of Art and Art Institute of Chicago studying with sculptors John Kearney, Don Seidon and Abbott Pattison and was affiliated with the North Shore Art League, Winnetka, IL
Over the years, Libberton developed his talents in graphic design, jewelry making, and painting as well as sculpture. These activities were in addition to an active, 33-year career as an art director/TV film producer for a major international advertising agency. Having moved to California in 1978, he devoted most of his energies to sculpture, including active participation in the Marin Society of Artists and Stone Sculptors of California.
Though Libberton works in stone, wood and bronze, his preference is marble, which has prompted trips to Italy and the quarries of Carrara. During one visit in 1985, he produced three sculptures now in place at Sutter Hill Montague Park in San Jose, California.
While not consciously departing from the soft, sensual forms of his earlier sculpture, Libbertons work has evolved into its current, often symmetrical, more hard-edged executions. This direction reveals a passion for simple, clean, powerful statements. His art is a balance of strength and elegance.
