Larry Frazier discovered art as a college freshman. Before that he was an enthusiastic math/sciences student in high school. His high schools literature teachers inspired him to go to a liberal arts college rather than an engineering school and happened into a school that requires all students to give art a try. He was tossed, at random, into the schools sculpture class and fell in love. He went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts at San Francisco Art Institute.
Then the river went underground, surfacing little, if at all, over the next several years. The beauty of exotic hardwood proved to be the next temptress and Larry has spent as much time as possible sculpting wood these past few years.
He says: Wood sculpture is a collaboration between the wood and the sculptor. Wood makes some contributions, and some restrictions. In bronze, clay, and the like, it's all the sculptor. It is entirely what I, the Sculptor want to make. Bronze has its attractions, and there are things one can do in bronze that one just cant do in wood. However, for me, wood is the medium whose attraction lasts.
Every block of wood presents a different challenge than any other. Larry works with hand-held power tools to help him achieve the precision lines in his sculptures. His sculptors eye was trained in school, but he is self-taught as a sculptor in wood. Besides the BFA in sculpture, he has a BS in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics. Which may be why he has such a fascination for creating Mobius Strips.
